Internships
Similar to "gap year" abroad and "long-term" volunteering, internships provide an opportunity to live and work abroad over an extended period of time. However, internships go one step further by creating a work experience that helps you build a better understanding of the world in relation to a specific field or area of study.
Participation in an international internship provides many benefits. Through an international internship you should expect to gain or increase:
- Your ability to use a foreign language
- An understanding of the dynamics of cross-cultural communication
- Credibility for your international portfolio (resume and CV)
- Confidence and comfort in managing international situations
- An advantage when exploring employment on an international level
As an intern you might work with an organization that will expect as much from you as they would expect from a new employee. Your work hours may be the same as those of other employees, and your dress code and behavior will be dictated by the organization's policies. Depending on the type of internship you choose, your work place may be a modern office building, an organic farm, or a health clinic (among other places).
In Nicaragua
In Nicaragua the only internships available today are in healthcare - where you will gain hands-on experience in a clinical environment working with local healthcare providers. This is an excellent opportunity to improve your Spanish in a medical setting and immerse yourself in the local culture while serving the needs of the community.
